Effects of the herbicides Benzoylpropethyl and flampropisopropyl on rat liver mitochondria : an alteration in membrane fluidity ?
1984
Abstract The action of the herbicides benzoylpropethyl and flampropisopropyl, and the corresponding unesterified acids was studied in rat liver mitochondria. The herbicides were found to (a) inhibit the mitochondrial electron transfer in complex III or at the level of ubiquinone (I50 of 4 nmol mg protein−1 for flampropisopropyl and 18 for benzoylpropethyl with succinate as a substrate); (b) have an additional (however less sensitive) site of inhibition near succinate dehydrogenase; and (c) interfere with energy transfer. Sensitivity was increased 2- (benzoylpropethyl) and 3.5-fold (flampropisopropyl) as the rats age increased from 12–13 weeks to 23–26 weeks. The free acids were far less eff…

Cooperation ‐ the form of sustainable tourism industry in Latvia / Bendradarbiavimas – darnaus Latvijos turizmo forma
2008
This paper draws attention to building networking and partnership amongst the market players of tourism industry in Latvia. The authors define cooperation as a process, which manifests in all fields of business operations, e.g. it occurs when two or more parties (enterprises) have business objectives which are mutually dependent. There are many ways and forms of cooperation that are of choice for every entrepreneur – formal and informal, vertical and horizontal, centralised and decentralised and others; it is just needed to evaluate all the benefits and contributions when to choose to compete and when to cooperate. Santrauka Šiame straipsnyje autorės dėsto darnaus turizmo principus Latvijos…
Realism Score for Immersive Virtual Reality Systems and Driving Simulators
2016
International audience; Traditional 2D or 3D quality assessment methods are not sufficient to assess the realism of the outputs of a simulator/immersive virtual reality system. We propose an assessment method based on a scoring system through a new approach. The objective of this paper is to propose a score scale for any simulator or immersive display system that would represent how close to the human visual system the signals that are sent through the display are. Weighted items considered are contrast, acuity, frames per seconds, brightness, field of view and the number of color available.
DFT and kinetic evidences of the preferential CO oxidation pattern of manganese dioxide catalysts in hydrogen stream (PROX)
2022
Abstract The oxidation functionality of Mn(IV) sites has been assessed by density functional theory (DFT) analysis of adsorption and activation energies of CO, H2 and O2 on a model Mn4O8 cluster. DFT calculations indicate that Mn(IV) atoms prompt an easy CO conversion to CO2 via a reaction path involving both catalyst and gas-phase oxygen species, while much greater energy barriers hinder H2 oxidation. Accordingly, a MnCeOx catalyst (Mnat/Ceat, 5) with large exposure of Mn(IV) sites shows a remarkable CO oxidation performance at T ≥ 293 K and no H2 oxidation activity below 393 K. Empiric kinetics disclose that the catalyst-oxygen abstraction step determines both CO and H2 oxidation rate, al…
Factors Affecting Polyphenol Biosynthesis in Wild and Field Grown St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum L. Hypericaceae/Guttiferae)
2009
The increasing diffusion of herbal products is posing new questions: why are products so often different in their composition and efficacy? Which approach is more suitable to increase the biochemical productivity of medicinal plants with large-scale, low-cost solutions? Can the phytochemical profile of a medicinal plant be modulated in order to increase the accumulation of its most valuable constituents? Will polyphenol-rich medicinal crops ever be traded as commodities? Providing a proactive answer to such questions is an extremely hard task, due to the large number of variables involved: intraspecific chemodiversity, plant breeding, ontogenetic stage, post-harvest handling, biotic and abi…
Stabilisation of mixed peptide/lipid complexes in selective antifungal hexapeptides
2004
AbstractThe design of antimicrobial peptides could have benefited from structural studies of known peptides having specific activity against targetmicrobes, but not toward other microorganisms. We have previously reported the identification of a series of peptides (PAF-series) activeagainst certain postharvest fungal phytopathogens, and devoid of toxicity towards E. coli and S. cerevisiae [Lo´pez-Garci´a et al. Appl.Environ. Microbiol. 68 (2002) 2453]. The peptides inhibited the conidia germination and hyphal growth. Here, we present a comparativestructural characterisation of selected PAF peptides obtained by single-amino-acid replacement, which differ in biological activity. Thepeptides w…
Enabling a win-win coexistence mechanism for WiFi and LTE in unlicensed bands
2018
The problem of WiFi and LTE coexistence has been significantly debated in the last years, with the emergence of LTE extensions enabling the utilization of unlicensed spectrum for carrier aggregation. Since the two technologies employ com-pletely different access protocols and frame transmission times, supporting coexistence with minimal modifications on existing protocols is not an easy task. Current solutions are often based on LTE unilateral adaptations, being LTE in unlicensed bands still under definition. In this paper, we demonstrate that it is possible to avoid a subordinated role for WiFi nodes, by simply equipping WiFi nodes with a sensing mechanism based on adaptive tunings of the …
Antiplatelet Antibodies Do Not Predict the Response to Intravenous Immunoglobulins during Immune Thrombocytopenia
2020
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune disease due to autoantibodies targeting platelet glycoproteins (GP). The mechanism of platelet destruction could differ depending on the specificity of antiplatelet antibodies: anti-GPIIb/IIIa antibodies lead to phagocytosis by splenic macrophages, in a Fc&gamma
